PGA Championship 2017 Leaderboard: Latest Scores and Standings from Friday

Steve SilvermanAug 11, 2017

The PGA Championship is supposed to be the domain of golf stars Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy, but Kevin Kisner did not get the memo.

Kisner, who was tied for the lead of the season's last major championship after the first round, fired a four-under round of 67 and held the top spot in the tournament at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, as he finished his second round.

"I'm hitting the ball really nice," Kisner said to TNT interviewer Amanda Balionis following his Friday round. "Things are going my way, which is obvious when you shoot eight-under for two days. Bad shots are working out, good shots are working out, and I am making a lot of putts. So, it's a lot of fun to play right now."

Spieth was one-over after the first round and was playing his second round Friday afternoon, while McIlroy followed up his opening round of one-over par 72 with another 72. McIlroy is 10 strokes behind Kisner at the midway point, and he would need to come back with strong performances on Saturday's moving day and Sunday's final round if he is going to get back in contention.

Spieth was relatively happy with the way he hit the ball in Thursday's opening round, but he had problems on Quail Hollow's challenging greens. Putting is normally one of Spieth's greatest attributes, but he just could not get it together during the first day of competition.

Jordan Spieth is hoping for improved putting in the second round of the PGA Championship.

"It seemed like the lid was on today," Spieth said, per Scott Fowler of the Charlotte Observer. "I burned a lot of edges. Some were good putts, some weren't. ... I can't putt any worse than I did today."

Spieth, the winner of the British Open last month, is going for the career Grand Slam at the PGA Championship. If he can find a way to win the Wanamaker Trophy, he would join Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tiger Woods as the only players who have won all four majors.

If the 24-year-old Spieth is successful at Quail Hollow, he would become the youngest member of the group to do it, eclipsing Woods' record by eight months.

Kisner had a conservative game plan in the first two rounds of the tournament, as he told Balionis he found a few holes that he thought he could birdie, and he was going to try to make pars on the majority of holes.

Kisner's mindset and execution have put him in an excellent position to make a run at winning his first major championship.

Rickie Fowler followed his opening round of 69 with a one-under 70, and he is five strokes behind Kisner after 36 holes.

Thorbjorn Olesen was tied with Kisner after the opening round and was playing his second round during the afternoon portion of Friday's tee times.
