Matthew Stafford Says 'No Timetable' on Completing New Contract with Lions

Mike ChiariJul 29, 2017

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford said Saturday there is "no timetable" for getting a new contract done with the team.

According to Kyle Meinke of MLive Media Group, Stafford acknowledged that talks are ongoing, however.

Per Spotrac, Stafford is entering the final year of his contract in 2017 and will make $22 million.

He is in line to potentially become the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL if and when he comes to terms on a deal, and there has been plenty of talk from both sides publicly about having interest in agreeing to a contract.

According to ESPN.com's Michael Rothstein, Lions president Rod Wood recently discussed completing a deal by any means necessary:

"It's going to be whatever it takes, I think, to make it happen from both sides. And whether he becomes the highest-paid or not, it'll be a short-lived designation because, as [general manager] Bob [Quinn] said, and I think it's true, if you're in the top whatever of quarterbacks, when your time comes up, your time comes up, and then somebody else's time comes up, and they become the highest [paid].

"It's a premium position, and you need to have a very, very good player at that position to be credible and be competitive, and I think we do have that, and we're working on getting a deal done."

The Lions selected Stafford out of Georgia with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft.

He is a one-time Pro Bowler (2014) and is coming off a strong statistical season that saw him throw for 4,327 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while leading Detroit to the playoffs.

Stafford has thrown for at least 4,200 yards and 20 touchdowns in six straight seasons, and he has taken Detroit to the postseason on three occasions.

Through eight seasons with the team, Stafford is already the franchise career leader in passing yardage (30,303) and touchdowns (187).
