Kylian Mbappe Fee Reportedly Set at €200M Amid Real Madrid, Man City Rumours

Christopher SimpsonJul 28, 2017

Monaco have reportedly set a €200 million price tag for Kylian Mbappe amid speculation linking him with Real Madrid and Manchester City

According to L'Equipe (h/t David F. Sanchidrian of AS), Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev has "re-opened the exit door" to allow Mbappe to leave, but only if his valuation is met.

The 18-year-old made L'Equipe's cover on Friday:

Per Sanchidrian, City and Madrid are said to be interested in him along with Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.

The Sky Blues are said to be nearest to a deal after making an offer of 160 million, but Monaco anticipate they will receive a higher bid as the interested clubs hold an "auction" for his signature.

Goal's Robin Bairner noted Real could be faced with additional complications in signing Mbappe that City do not have to face:

Citizens boss Pep Guardiola has already added Mbappe's Monaco team-mate Bernardo Silva to a stunning array of attacking options that already included Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling, not to mention Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva, but he nevertheless appears determined to recruit more outstanding quality and depth to his side.

Real have a greater need following Alvaro Morata's departure, not to mention Cristiano Ronaldo is now 32 and Benzema will turn 30 this year.

Sporting Intelligence's Nick Harris provided some context as to why clubs should employ some caution before spending enormous sums on Mbappe, but Grup 14's Diana Kristinne is unsurprised by his price tag:

Indeed, the idea that a player could be worth around double the current world-record fee on the back of one campaign is unprecedented and would have been almost unthinkable before this summer.

On the other, it was a magnificent campaign in which Mbappe—who only turned 18 halfway through the season—racked up 26 goals and 14 assists, and he looks to be firmly capable of meeting his considerable potential.

Despite his inexperience, his youth is also likely driving his price up further as he could make for a long-term investment, potentially playing a starring role in his new side for a decade or more.

Such a large and complex deal might well include add-ons based on the youngster's performance, for example, which could bring the total cost of his transfer even higher than his initial fee, so if he does leave Monaco this summer, it's clearly going to be an enormously expensive exercise for his suitors.

While the Ligue 1 champions would likely hope to keep their precocious star, his sale could see them generate more than €350 million from player departures this summer. Their task will be then to set about replacing their top talents with players who can help them defend their title next year.
