La'el Collins, Cowboys Agree to 2-Year, $15.4 Million Contract Extension

Rob GoldbergJul 25, 2017

The Dallas Cowboys have officially signed offensive tackle La'el Collins to a two-year extension that keeps him under contract through the 2019 season.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network first reported the deal is worth $15.4 million. Clarence Hill Jr. of the Star-Telegram confirmed the news and reported Collins will receive a $4 million signing bonus.

Collins has started 14 games over the past two years at guard, but he is expected to take over as the team's starting right tackle in 2017.

The projected first-round pick went undrafted in 2015 due to his possible connectionwith the murder of a former girlfriend shortly before the draft. He signed with the Cowboys after he was ruled out as a suspect.

As several analysts noted, the latest deal makes up for his potential lost money:

The only question now is how he will fare going forward after moving positions and playing only three games last year due to a torn ligament in his toe. Based on what he has shown in practices, the move hasn't seemed to affect him.

"My mindset is I don't care where I'm at, who I'm playing against, it don't matter," Collins said, per Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News. "I'm going to block you, and that's just the way it is."

The Cowboys already have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL with Tyron Smith, Zack Martin and Travis Frederick all earning Pro Bowl appearances. A healthy Collins at right tackle could go a long way toward helping the team contend for a Super Bowl.
