Gareon Conley Remains Under Investigation for April Rape Allegation

Mike ChiariJul 24, 2017

The Cleveland Division of Police announced Monday that Oakland Raiders rookie cornerback Gareon Conley remains under investigation regarding an April sexual assault allegation.

According to Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-JournalSgt. Jennifer Ciaccia said the following about Conley's case: "Detectives have had meetings with the prosecutor's office. They would still classify it as being under investigation. No official charges have been filed. ... They haven't ruled it closed. The official statement is it still remains under investigation."

Dan DeRoos of Cleveland 19 reported in April that a 23-year-old woman alleged Conley sexually assaulted her just days before the NFL draft.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Conley, the Raiders selected the Ohio State product with the No. 24 overall pick in the first round of the draft.

Conley has maintained that he is innocent since news of the investigation initially broke, and Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie expressed confidence in that notion on SiriusXM Radio after selecting him, per Alex Marvez of Sporting News: "We researched everything thoroughly and were totally convinced. We felt good about what was presented before us. We were very comfortable with the pick."

Conley remains unsigned, and with all players set to report to Raiders training camp on Friday, it appears as though his legal situation may conflict with preparations for the 2017 season.

The 22-year-old is coming off a solid junior campaign with the Buckeyes that saw him register 26 tackles as well as career highs with four interceptions and eight passes defended.

Until Conley gets signed and is able to move past the off-field question marks, the Raiders are likely to deploy Sean Smith and David Amerson as their starting corners.
