Dempsey entered Saturday's semifinal as a substitute in the 66th minute, and his arrival immediately woke up a side that lacked killer instinct in the attacking third.

In addition to the historic strikewhich was his second career USMNT goal off the bench, per ESPN Stats & Info's Paul CarrDempsey set up his team's first goal with some crafty dribbling and a savvy pass ahead to Jozy Altidore, who broke a 0-0 deadlock in the 72nd minute.

Dempsey will try to make a similar impact Wednesday when the United States returns to the pitch seeking its second Gold Cup title in the last four years against the winner of Sunday's semifinal between Mexico and Jamaica.
