MLB Trade Deadline 2017: Date and Top Rumors from Around the League

Paul KasabianJul 21, 2017

The 2017 MLB non-waiver trade deadline is Monday at 4 p.m. ET, and we've already seen a ton of action.

Sluggers J.D. Martinez and Todd Frazier were dealt from rebuilding teams to contenders, and Marlins reliever David Phelps moved across the country to Seattle.

Phelps isn't the only reliever who will be traded before the deadline, as a few bullpen arms have been involved in recent rumors.

Here's a look at the latest on three closers and where they may be headed before July 31.

Justin Wilson

The Detroit Tigers should be able to pick a great offer for left-hander closer Justin Wilson, as many playoff contenders are vying for bullpen help, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports:

Wilson has 10 saves in addition to a 2.75 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 36 innings this season.

The Nats need Wilson's help more than any other team on Rosenthal's list, as the bullpen has been the team's only weakness this year. Through games played on Thursday, the Nationals had the worst bullpen ERA in Major League Baseball (5.32). In fact, only one other bullpen has an ERA higher than 5.00 (Detroit).

Washington picked up right-hander Ryan Madson and left-hander Sean Doolittle in the trade with the Oakland Athletics, but it could use another arm to bolster the back end.

Wilson seems like a great fit, as it would give the Nats two solid lefty arms in the bullpen. If they don't get a trade done with Detroit, expect them to land at least one more reliever.

Zach Britton

According to Buster Olney of ESPN, the Houston Astros could be in the mix for Baltimore Orioles closer Zach Britton:

The same goes for the Los Angeles Dodgers, per Andy McCullough of the Los Angeles Times:

The Dodgers would make one of their strengths even stronger by acquiring Britton. They already have the best bullpen in the bigs with a league-best 2.86 ERA.

Closer Kenley Jansen leads the team's relievers, as he has 24 saves and a 0.88 ERA. Adding Britton would give the Dodgers a nearly unstoppable lefty-righty one-two punch.

Houston needs Britton a bit more. Ken Giles has done well as the Astros closer, saving 20 games, but he also has a 3.31 ERA, which is a bit bloated for someone tasked with shutting down the ninth inning.

With Britton in the mix, Houston would acquire one of the game's best closers, enabling them to move Giles to the eighth inning as the team's primary setup man.

It will be interesting to see if Houston and Los Angeles, the clear favorites for the AL and NL pennants, get into a bidding war for Britton.

AJ Ramos

Phelps may not be the only Marlins reliever heading out of town, as closer AJ Ramos could be making his way to a playoff contender as well.

Per Jerry Crasnick of ESPN, there is a lot of interest in the 30-year-old closer.

Ramos has struggled this season, as he has a 4.08 ERA. However, he is only a year removed from making the National League All-Star team, and in his two full seasons as the Marlins closer, Ramos had 70 saves, a 2.55 ERA and 160 strikeouts in 134.1 innings.

If Ramos can find the magic that led his being one of the best closers in baseball in 2015 and 2016, then he will be a great asset for a playoff contender.
