Unai Emery Confirms PSG's Intention to Sign Neymar or Alexis Sanchez This Summer
Paris Saint-Germain manager Unai Emery has confirmed that the French club are trying to sign "the best players in the world" and want to snap up one of Alexis Sanchez or Neymar.
The Spanish boss admitted PSG need to add the best players to their squad if they are to compete for the UEFA Champions League in the 2017-18 season.
Per L'Equipe (via Metro's Ewan Roberts) Emery was asked about the possibility of signing Sanchez or Neymar:
"PSG wants the best players in the world, who are in the best clubs in the world.
"If we want to compete with Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid and win the Champions League, then PSG must have a player of the world top five. We are trying to get one signed this summer.
"The president and the club have been working for years to attract the best players.
"The team, but also the fans, would be glad that there is a top five, six or seven player in addition to the already strong ones who are here.
"This quest is not easy. Maybe we'll get there, maybe not."
Emery added that he also wanted to sign "a French player for a French club," and he is known to be an admirer of AS Monaco teenager Kylian Mbappe, per Roberts.
Reports have emerged recently that PSG could sign Barcelona star Neymar by meeting his £196 million release clause, per Pete Jenson in the Daily Mail.
Meanwhile, the Paris club have been regularly linked with Sanchez, whose current Arsenal contract has only one more year left to run, per Jason Burt in the Telegraph.
Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has insisted the north London club will not sell the Chile international, per John Cross in the Mirror:
However, it seems much more likely PSG would be able to prise the 28-year-old away from Arsenal than Neymar from Barca.
There have been claims the Brazil international is unhappy in Lionel Messi's shadow at Barca, per Sport.
But the Catalan giants will be loath to let one of their star players go for anything less than his astronomical release clause, while—given Sanchez's contract situation—Arsenal could be tempted by a handsome PSG bid.
