Gilas Pilipinas vs. Iraq: Time, Live Stream for 2017 William Jones Cup

Steve SilvermanJul 19, 2017

Gilas Pilipinas faces a crucial game Thursday when it faces Iraq Thursday after dropping an 83-72 decision to South Korea Wednesday at the Taipei Heping Basketball Gymnasium in Taipei, Taiwan.

Gilas had won three games in a row prior to facing South Korea in the 39th William Jones Cup, a tournament, that is sanctioned by FIBA Asia. However, the Philippines was done in by their poor shooting from beyond the arc. The team managed to make just one three-pointer even though it attempted 26 shots.

Gilas Pilipinas trailed by 16 points but managed a fourth-quarter comeback. After pulling to within four points of the South Koreans, the winners maintained their poise and held on for the victory.

Gilas Pilipinas will take a 3-2 record into its Thursday game with Iraq. The game is scheduled to be played at 5 p.m. local time, which correlates to a 5 a.m. ET tip-off. The game can be live-streamed at the tournament's designated website.

The poor shooting effort kept Gilas from keeping their winning streak alive. Head coach Chot Reyes was frustrated by his team's efforts from the outside, especially because the Filipinos played solid defense against a strong South Korean team.

"I don't have the stats, but I think we shot 1-for-65 tonight," Reyes said, per spin.ph. "Our defense was good enough, we held a good team like Korea to 82 points. That would've been enough to win but we just couldn't hit our three-point shots."

The loss damaged Gilat's hopes of winning the William Jones Cup, but Reyes will have to get his team ready for Iraq.

Gilat will rely on import Mike Myers and point guard Jio Jalalon to lead the way. Both men scored 18 points in the loss to South Korea, while Christian Standhardinger scored 16 points.

Both teams take a 3-2 record into this matchup.
