Nelson Semedo, Barcelona Will Agree to Contract After Benfica Transfer

Benfica full-back Nelson Semedo is on the verge of completing a move to Barcelona, with only a medical standing in the way.

The Blaugrana announced the news via their official website on Thursday. Per the report, he will take his medical on Friday.

According to Noticias ao Minuto (h/t Anthony Chapman of The Sun), Semedo was previously a target for Manchester United.

The 23-year-old was a vital member of the Benfica side that did the Portuguese double last season, and he represented Portugal at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe believes the reported transfer fee of €30 million, per Alex Smith of the Mirror, is excellent value for the defender:

Right-back was a major area of concern for the Catalans last season following an injury to Aleix Vidal. Sergi Roberto held his own but was clearly a better fit in midfield, and reinforcements were needed.

Landing a young, established player with upside for a reasonable transfer fee is a great way of addressing the situation. This is an excellent move for the Catalan giants, who are putting themselves in a good position for a title run next season.
