Markelle Fultz Leaves Summer League Game vs. Warriors with Ankle Injury

Mike ChiariJul 8, 2017

Philadelphia 76ers No. 1 overall draft pick Markelle Fultz left Saturday's Las Vegas Summer League game against the Golden State Warriors in the third quarter with an apparent ankle injury.

Bob Cooney of the Philadelphia Daily News reported Fultz was holding his left ankle and exited the court without putting any pressure on it.

The injury occurred when Fultz rolled his ankle while attempting a chase-down block, and he did not return to the contest.

ESPN's Ramona Shelburne reported Fultz was undergoing X-rays on his ankle, and she followed that up by reporting that 76ers general manager Brian Colangelo said the rookie was diagnosed with a sprained ankle.

Prior to leaving, Fultz had scored eight points on 3-of-12 shooting with two rebounds, one assist and two turnovers.

Anthony Slater of the San Jose Mercury News tweeted video of Fultz in considerable pain as he was being helped to the locker room by teammates:

Fultz's injury marks the latest stroke of bad luck for the Sixers when it comes to their first-round draft picks.

Center Joel Embiid missed each of his first two NBA seasons and all but 31 games in 2016-17 due to injuries, while 2016 first-round pick Ben Simmons missed the entire 2016-17 campaign.

After watching Fultz go down, Embiid tweeted the following:

While Fultz's performance prior to the injury wasn't quite as impressive as his Utah Summer League dominance in two games, he turned in some highlight-reel plays.

Among them was this drive to the hoop shared by the Sixers' official Twitter account:

Fultz also had a sweet dish off the glass, although it may have been meant as a shot initially:

Arguably his best play of the game came when Fultz put the Warriors in the spin cycle and knocked down a fadeaway for two:

Fultz's dynamic skill set was on display for parts of three quarters, and he showed the basketball world why the 76ers jumped at the chance to trade up to No. 1 and pick him.

Philadelphia is among the NBA's most promising young teams due to a core that includes Fultz, Embiid, Simmons, Dario Saric and Jahlil Okafor.

Although the severity of Fultz's sprain isn't yet known, the Sixers' injury misfortunes are becoming a serious speed bump in their attempts to become players in the Eastern Conference.
