Quai 54 World Streetball Championship 2017: Schedule, Participants and Preview

Mike ChiariJul 7, 2017

After a one-year hiatus, the Quai 54 World Streetball Championship is set to return this weekend in the form of a 16-team, single-elimination tournament.

According to the event's official website, the games will be held at Pelouse de Reuilly in Paris on Saturday and Sunday with the champions being determined Sunday night.

The action will take place from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. local time on both days, and it will also feature a number of musical performances.

Along with the tournament itself, a slam dunk contest will be held Sunday.

Qualifications were held Friday to whittle the field down to 16 teams, and two of the top teams are under the United Kingdom-based Midnight Madness umbrella.

Per Bradley Gains of HoopsFix.com, Midnight Madness sent two teams to Paris by the name of All-Stars and Elite.

Midnight Madness representative Nhamo Shere expressed his hope that both teams will make some noise at Quai 54 2017:

"I'm happy the tournament is back—it's a huge part of our summer plans. We're looking forward to taking our two teams, who both go straight through to the knockout rounds based on how well we did last time out. There are no 'A team,' 'B teams,' just two strong teams who represent the best of GB. ... We know the competition will come out swinging from the jump, but we're ready for it and will be swinging right back."

The Quai 54 is sponsored by Jordan Brand and had been held every year since 2002 until its cancellation last year due to concerns over potential security threats.

Now that the 2017 edition is on the horizon, however, a new champion will be crowned for the first time in two years.
