Greenbrier Classic 2017: Sebastian Munoz Jumps out to Lead on Thursday

Timothy RappJul 6, 2017

Sebastian Munoz took the first-round lead at the Greenbrier Classic in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, on Thursday, shooting an impressive nine-under 61.

The round put him two strokes ahead of his closest competitor, Davis Love III, while six players sat three strokes back.

Munoz played nearly flawless golf. While he had a bogey on No. 13, he more than made up for that with 10 birdies. The PGA Tour shared his impressive stats from the day:

Love III was nearly as impressive, finishing bogey-free on the afternoon.

"I've been working real hard the last couple of weeks on trying to fix my swing to kind of swing around a stiff back and a stiff hip," he said after his round, per the Associated Press (via the News Tribune). "I've given up on hitting it a long way. I'm just saying I've got to hit it straight, and this is the perfect golf course for me to get it in the fairway. A lot of hard work is kind of starting to pay off."

While Munoz and Love III were the top stories, Phil Mickelson—who shot a solid three-under for the day—also provided a few memorable moments:

"I think any time you have a change of environment it brings about a new energy," Mickelson said in his first tournament with his brother, Tim Mickelson, as his caddie. "But more than that, Tim is one my favorite people to be around. We really had a lot of fun together today."

Danny Lee had one of the drives of the day on his way to a six-under round:

And Webb Simpson impressed with this chip:

The field will collectively need more shots like that to keep pace with Munoz, however, who was scorching hot on Thursday. If he can take that form into the weekend, he'll be tough to catch, though Love III looks as though he'll have something to say atop the leaderboard before the Greenbrier concludes.
