Marcus Smart Reportedly Not Traded by Celtics at 2018 NBA Deadline

Rob GoldbergFeb 8, 2018

Marcus Smart will reportedly remain with the Boston Celtics following Thursday's NBA trade deadline.

Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports provided the update, noting the team values the guard "tremendously" and "showed it in talks with other teams."

Smart is in his fourth year with the Celtics after being the No. 6 overall pick in 2014. While the roster has undergone a significant overhaul over the past year, with Isaiah Thomas, Avery Bradley and Jae Crowder among others being traded away, Smart remains a steady member in the rotation.

The 23-year-old has been a key part of the team's success since entering the league. That has continued this season, as he's averaging 10.1 points and 4.7 assists per game.

He has been especially valuable on defense, as he has averaged at least one steal per game each year while often matching up against the opponent's best perimeter player. He ranks 25th in the NBA this season in defensive win shares, per Basketball Reference.

That defensive effort helped Smart earn consistent playing time, even as he moved in and out of the starting lineup throughout his career.

While ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski previously reported on his podcast that the guard would be available in trades (via Chelsea Howard of Sporting News), he will remain in Boston for at least the rest of the season.

He has recently missed time due to a hand laceration, but he should be ready for a big second half of the year.

Although Smart will be a restricted free agent in the summer, he will first try to help the Celtics bring home a title.
