Michigan 4-Star DE Corey Malone-Hatcher Announces Medical Retirement

Tim DanielsJul 5, 2017

University of Michigan defensive lineman Corey Malone-Hatcher announced Tuesday he's retiring from football before getting a chance to play for the Wolverines.

The class of 2017 recruit confirmed the decision, which is due to a lingering Achilles injury, with a post on social media:

Malone-Hatcher was a 4-star prospect who rated as the No. 297 overall recruit among this year's incoming group, according to the Scout.com rankings. He was also listed as the No. 31 defensive end and the second-best player at the position from Michigan.

The St. Joseph High School standout committed to Michigan in June 2016 and became an early enrollee in January, but he could never fully recover from the Achilles problem originally suffered in 2015.

He would have been given the opportunity to earn an immediate role in the defensive rotation if healthy, as the Wolverines are looking to fill several voids within the front seven.

Rashan Gary and Carlo Kemp are among the other high-upside prospects who will be given the chance to step up for Jim Harbaugh's squad.

Meanwhile, Malone-Hatcher confirmed he's planning to stay at Michigan as a student and can keep his scholarship after taking a medical disqualification.
