Rajon Rondo Reportedly 'In the Mix' for Lakers PG Spot Amid George Hill Rumors

Scott PolacekJul 3, 2017

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly in the point guard market even after selecting Lonzo Ball with the No. 2 pick in the 2017 NBA draft.

On Monday, Sam Amick of USA Today reported "Rajon Rondo is still in the mix" for Los Angeles' point guard spot. Earlier in the day, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported the Lakers were meeting with George Hill in Los Angeles on Monday to discuss a potential one-year deal.

Wojnarowski explained the Lakers were looking to give Hill a one-year deal so he could serve as a mentor for Ball while they preserve cap space for next summer's free-agent class.

The same path could theoretically exist for the 31-year-old Rondo.

The four-time All-Star and four-time member of an All-Defensive team has spent the majority of his career tallying high assist totals and leading the way on defense. Ball was a pass-oriented point guard at UCLA, and Rondo could help him hone his skill set in the NBA considering he has led the league in assists per game three times.

This past season with the Chicago Bulls, Rondo wasn't the electrifying playmaker he was in his prime as a member of the Boston Celtics, as he averaged just 7.8 points and 6.7 assists per game.

However, he thrived in two postseason contests, posting totals just short of a triple-double at 11.5 points, 10.0 assists and 8.5 rebounds a night before suffering a thumb injury. The dialed-in Rondo from those two playoff games for Chicago would be an asset for the Lakers as a veteran leader in their ongoing rebuild.
