Lakers Rumors: George Hill, LA Reportedly Meeting, Discussing 1-Year Contract

Timothy RappJul 3, 2017

Free-agent guard George Hill is reportedly meeting with the Los Angeles Lakers to discuss a potential one-year deal, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Wojnarowski added:

Wojnarowski and colleague Ramona Shelburne later reported the sides have "significant mutual interest" in an agreement. The report also stated the deal would allow Hill and Lonzo Ball to play together.

Hill is now the top remaining point guard on the market, so he should receive plenty of interest around the league. Ian Begley of ESPN.com reported Sunday, for instance, that the New York Knicks have been trying to unload salary to make a push for Hill.

And Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders reported that Hill's name has become popular:

Sam Vecenie of Sporting News, meanwhile, is surprised Hill is still available:

Hill, 31, averaged 16.9 points and 4.2 assists in 49 games with the Utah Jazz last season. With the team trading for point guard Ricky Rubio, however, Hill became expendable in Utah.

Injuries are the main concern. He's played in 50 or fewer games in three of the last six seasons and two of the last three. When he's on the court, though, he's a solid scorer and distributor who has also become an excellent three-point shooter, hitting on 40.6 percent from beyond the arc the past two seasons.

In Los Angeles, he would be an excellent fit next to rookie point guard Lonzo Ball. While the UCLA product will likely spend a good portion of his time on the ball, he's also an excellent shooter and off-ball cutter in the half court and, given his deficiencies creating his own shot off the dribble, would thrive next to a player such as Hill, who can play facilitator.

In Ball and Hill, the Lakers would have a playmaking backcourt that could run head coach Luke Walton's scheme and hit perimeter shots. It's easy to envision the fit in Los Angeles for Hill.
