Nick Kyrgios Retires from Wimbledon Tie with Pierre-Hugues Herbert After Injury

Tyler ConwayJul 3, 2017

No. 20 seed Nick Kyrgios was forced to retire from his first-round match against Pierre Hugues Herbert at Wimbledon on Monday due to injury.

Kyrgios, 22, was facing a 3-6, 4-6 hole and spent most of the match playing through obvious pain. The Aussie entered the year's third major championship nursing a hip injury that left him unfit to continue, limiting his range of motion and forcing grimaces with most difficult shots.

He categorized himself as "60, 65 percent" healthy coming into the tournament.

"I'll be doing absolutely everything I can," Kyrgios told reporters. "I've been taking anti-inflammatories, doing an hour-and-a-half of rehab every day, getting treatment. But there's only so much treatment I can do with type of injury. It needs time to rest."

The hip problems are a root cause of Kyrgios' struggles throughout 2017. He was bounced in the second round at both the Australian Open and French Open after reaching at least the third round in every Grand Slam in 2016.

"I've had this hip injury for pretty much the last six or seven months, so it's been giving me grief so hopefully it's settled down a little bit," Kyrgios said before the tournament.

Kyrgios was first injured at the 2016 U.S. Open. With the injury still bothering him to the point of needing to pull out of Wimbledon, perhaps it's time for him to sit for a more extended period and actually give it rest before returning to competitive tennis.
