The boxing world was stunned as Jeff Horn defeated Manny Pacquiao to claim the WBO welterweight title in Brisbane, Australia, on Sunday.

The Hornet was given a controversial unanimous-points verdict as the 38-year-old legend was beaten in front of a packed house at the Suncorp Stadium.

The judges scored the fight 117-111, 115-113, 115-113 in favour of the new champion, leaving Pac-Man gracious in defeat.

Pacquiao appeared to be the natural aggressor and was more accurate with his punching, but he was deemed the loser to the surprise of many.

Horn accelerated through the middle rounds as he pushed for a shock win, and his work during this period was the difference.

Both men tired deep into the bout, allowing the new champion to edge the decision on two cards. Surprisingly, Horn won by six rounds on the other judge's verdict.

The win was one of the sport's biggest surprises in recent memory, but Horn said he always had faith in his ability—remaining levelheaded after the event.

According to the Australian Associated Press (via the Guardian), Horn declared: "I've just believed since I was very young that I could do this. This is not the best moment of my life—it is yet to come with my beautiful wife Joanna, she's pregnant with our first child."

Pacquiao admitted the Aussie gave him a hard fight and that he was a tougher opponent than he originally thought, per the Australian Associated Press.

The controversy around the verdict will almost definitely trigger a rematch, and it will be interesting to see if the legend agrees to a second bout in Australia.

Pacquiao certainly appeared to do enough to claim victory, but the home fans were delighted when their local boy was declared champion.

Horn is a talent in the making, but he will have to defend his title to gain the recognition his achievement warrants.
