Iman Shumpert Reportedly Subject of Trade Talks Between Cavaliers, Rockets

Rob GoldbergJul 1, 2017

The Houston Rockets have reportedly identified another guard who can improve their chances next season.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Cleveland Cavaliers are in talks to trade Iman Shumpert to Houston.

Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com added that it's Cleveland's hope to get a draft pick and a trade exemption, which would allow it to re-sign Kyle Korver and make future deals.

Shumpert is set to make over $10 million in each of the next two seasons, though he has a player option for 2018-19, per Basketball Insiders, so clearing him off the books would allow the Cavaliers to re-sign Korver.

According to Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio, Cleveland has been discussing potential moves involving Shumpert throughout Saturday.

The 27-year-old averaged 7.5 points and 2.9 rebounds per night in 76 games last season, playing a significant role with 25.5 minutes per contest. He is known as a solid defender and ranked fifth on the team with 1.4 defensive win shares, per Basketball Reference.

If the move to the Rockets is completed, Shumpert would provide the Western Conference contenders with valuable depth and the experience of someone who has won an NBA title and reached the Finals in each of the last three years.

Shumpert, who knocked down a respectable 36 percent of his attempts from three-point range last season, would fit well in Houston's trey-dependent system.
