Ellen White Double Sees England Past Denmark in Women's International Friendly
England won their final international friendly ahead of the upcoming 2017 European Championship on Saturday, beating Denmark 2-1 thanks to two goals by Ellen White.
The Lionesses captain gave the visitors the lead against the run of play late in the first half, but Pernille Harder tied things after the break.
White bagged the winner just a few minutes later, converting a rebound after her first attempt hit the frame of the goal.
Here's a look at the two teams:
Fans hoping for an exciting match filled with inspiring, attacking football were left disappointed early. This friendly lived up to its name, with neither team seemingly interested in taking any risks ahead of the European Championship.
White almost got a touch on a free-kick that likely would have resulted in a goal, but outside of that, chances were rare.
Fran Kirby congratulated the skipper on her armband:
Denmark dominated possession in the first half and started creating chances toward the end of the period, with Simone Boye Sorensen heading wide from a promising position and Stine Larsen wasting a great look on goal.
The hosts were left to rue those misses, as White opened the scoring at the end of the half, producing a nice finish after good work by Demi Stokes. The team's Twitter account loved it:
The late goal didn't lead to improvements after the break, as England defended their lead and Denmark failed to create many chances. The Lionesses ran into several bookings and did a fine job protecting goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain, but there was nothing they could do about Harder's stunning free-kick after 66 minutes.
Denmark seemed ready to push for a late winner, but White struck again 10 minutes later, doubling her tally after her initial shot hit the cross bar. Here's a look at the goal:
Manager Mark Sampson then made a few substitutions, and the Lionesses fully focused on defending their advantage. The changes worked, as the hosts barely mustered any more chances.
England's next outing will be at the European Championship against Scotland on July 19, while the Danes will play one more friendly—at Austria on Thursday—before playing the second match at the Euros, versus Belgium on July 16.
