Tony Romo Says Cowboys Didn't Trade for Brett Favre to Keep Him

On a recent episode of the Doomsday Podcast, Ed Werder and Matt Mosley revealed a story told to them by former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo regarding a nixed trade for Brett Favre.

Werder and Mosley said on the podcast (h/t Will Brinson of CBS Sports) that Romo had told them the Cowboys turned down a trade with the Green Bay Packers for Favre because they didn't want to include Romo in the deal.

The hosts also said Romo told them the deal was proposed during Bill Parcells' tenure as Cowboys head coach.

Romo became Dallas' starter in 2006 after taking over for Drew Bledsoe, which also happened to be Parcells' final year with the team.

In 2005, the Packers selected Aaron Rodgers in the first round of the draft to be Favre's successor. That's precisely what Rodgers became, but not until Favre was dealt to the New York Jets in 2008.

While Favre did have a huge year with the Minnesota Vikings in 2009, as he threw for 33 touchdowns and led them to the NFC Championship Game, he retired following the 2010 campaign.

Romo enjoyed a 13-year career with the Cowboys that saw him reach four Pro Bowls and throw for 34,183 yards and 248 touchdowns, both of which are franchise records.

An injury forced Romo to miss the start of the 2016 season, which thrust rookie Dak Prescott into the starting role.

Prescott thrived, and rather than attempting to catch on with another team, Romo retired this offseason to pursue a career in broadcasting at CBS.
