Tim DanielsJun 28, 2017

The New York Rangers and defenseman Brendan Smith reached an agreement Wednesday on a four-year contract extension worth $17.4 million.

David Pagnotta‏ of The Fourth Period first reported the terms of the new deal and noted it includes a limited no-trade clause.

Smith joined the Rangers from the Detroit Red Wings in a February trade. He was set to become an unrestricted free agent July 1 before signing the extension.

The 28-year-old Canadian blueliner scored nine points in 51 games between the Wings and Rangers last season. The stay-at-home defender topped out at 19 points during the 2013-14 season in Detroit.

Micah Blake McCurdy of HockeyViz.com provided a closer look at Smith:

His decision to stay in New York doesn't come as a surprise based on comments he made in May about his experience following the midseason trade, per Justin Tasch of the New York Daily News.

"Yeah, for sure. I enjoy it here," Smith said. "I like the guys, I think the team is really good, and we're only gonna get better with all the young players."

He should retain pretty much the same role with the Rangers moving forward, which means playing around 20 minutes per contest.
