October 14th, 1985

On this day, Broadway Joe’s signature #12 was retired by the New York Jets before a Monday Night Football game with the Miami Dolphins.  Namath is an NFL Hall of Famer that played 12 years as quarterback of the Jets, but finished his career with Los Angeles Rams.  In 1999, Namath was ranked number 96 on The Sporting News’ list of the 100 Greatest Football Players, although most of us blogging junkies remember him for one, glorious event on December 3rd, 2003.

Heck, there’s even a prominent sports blog named after this miraculous event.
