No. 1 Pick Markelle Fultz Happy to Go to 76ers Because Philly Has 7 Chick-fil-As

Thomas DuffyJun 23, 2017

When eventual No. 1 pick Markelle Fultz found out that the Philadelphia 76ers traded up to the top spot in the 2017 NBA draft, he had one question.

"OK, cool. Do they have Chick-fil-A there?"

According to Fultz's piece on The Players' Tribune, the popular chain restaurant was a big reason why he was all-in on joining The Process. Fultz said a crispy chicken sandwich is his good-luck charm, so he was thrilled upon finding out via Google search that his new home has seven Chick-fil-As (including the one at the airport).

And, somehow, the Sixers knew about his love for restaurant.

"Anyway, guess what happened when I showed up to the Sixers training facility? They’d ordered Chick-fil-A. It was there waiting for me on a table. For real. A bunch of sandwiches.

I don’t know how they knew, but they knew.

And I know it’s not a big deal, but a little part of me was thinking, 'Respect. They did their research.'"

Fultz also touched on his relationship with Joel Embiid—sorry, Mayor Embiid—his struggles with high school hoops and his stone-faced demeanor in the essay.
