Asuka Retains NXT Women's Title vs. Nikki Cross to Extend Win Streak

Mike ChiariJun 28, 2017

Asuka extended her record-breaking winning streak Wednesday on NXT by defeating Nikki Cross to retain the NXT Women's Championship in a Last Woman Standing match.

Asuka finally finished Cross off by hitting a superplex off a ladder and onto the NXT announce table. The champion stumbled back to her feet just as the referee completed his 10-count. WWE NXT shared a replay of the move that won Asuka the match:

NXT announcer Mauro Ranallo and star Drew McIntyre were complimentary of both wrestlers:

Asuka and Cross have been at odds for several weeks dating back to the build toward their match at NXT TakeOver: Chicago.

In a Triple Threat that also included Ruby Riot, the Empress of Tomorrow defeated both Cross and Riot to continue her run of dominance in NXT.

A couple of weeks ago on NXT, Asuka, Cross and Riot went at it again in a rematch, except their second meeting was an elimination match.

After Riot was eliminated from the match, things broke down, as Asuka and Cross battled throughout the arena, and the bout was ruled a no-contest, as seen in this video courtesy of WWE's official Twitter account:

With no winner decided, NXT general manager William Regal made a groundbreaking announcement by booking Asuka against Cross in NXT's first Last Woman Standing match.

That type of match is right up the deranged Cross' alley, and she expressed joy regarding the decision on Twitter:

In response, Asuka essentially advised the SAnitY member to watch her back:

Although Asuka entered Wednesday having run through the competition more impressively than perhaps any female wrestler in WWE history, Cross provided a significant challenge due to her willingness to throw caution to the wind.

The Scottish Superstar is borderline psychotic as evidenced by her involvement with SAnitY, and she has proved that she's willing to go to almost any length in order to win.

What Asuka may lack in terms of being unhinged, she more than makes up for in being technically sound and having the ability to cut down her opponents with some of the most dangerous strikes in the game.

That was on full display in Asuka's victory Wednesday, and it is fair to question if anyone is capable of stopping her.

Nobody has done so yet, but a now-healthy Ember Moon is waiting in the wings, and she may be ready for her second shot at Asuka's crown.
