WWE 205 Live Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from June 20
While 205 Live often produces at least one match-of-the-week candidate, the poor attention to storytelling has driven many fans away.
The crowd is also a big issue. Nobody in the stands seems happy to sit through another hour of midcard matches after having watched two hours of SmackDown.
However, Neville has established himself as one of the best champions in WWE today, and he continues to hone his heel character to become more entertaining with each passing week.
Akira Tozawa has been pegged as the next challenger for the Cruiserweight Championship, but his affiliation with Titus O'Neil isn't doing him any favors.
Let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's episode of 205 Live.
Jack Gallagher vs. Tony Nese
1 of 3The first match of the night saw Gentleman Jack Gallagher take on Tony Nese. This contest came about after Gallagher drove The Premier Athlete off last week when coming to the aid of Austin Aries.
Nese showed off his power while Gallagher used some of his more entertaining tricks to even the playing field. Both men did exactly what you would expect, but that doesn't mean they weren't fun to watch.
Gallagher has been without a storyline for some time, but Nese has never been used to his fullest potential. It was nice to see both men given a chance to remind everyone why WWE hired them in the first place.
After faking an injury, Nese picked up a needed win with a running knee in the corner. The crowd seemed surprised by the result, which tells you all you need to know about The Premier Athlete's booking up to this point.
Grade: C+
Notes and Highlights
- Vic Joseph is fitting in well at the commentary table. Having a two-man booth helps him mesh better with Corey Graves.
- Watching Gallagher headbutt his opponent hard enough to stagger himself will never get old.
- Considering Nese flaunts his muscular physique, you would think his finisher would be a powerful slam or suplex-like move.
Drew Gulak vs. Mustafa Ali
2 of 3Drew Gulak came to the ring spouting more of his nonsense about how 205 Live should be a no-fly zone. He even tried to convince Mustafa Ali to team up with him instead of fighting each other.
Ali dropkicking him out of the ring made his opinion clear. The high-flyer took control again after the bell, but he was knocked off the apron and landed right on his left arm.
Gulak is a great technician, so he brought the fight back to the mat for the next several minutes. Despite the injured arm, Ali picked up the win with a roll up.
Hopefully, this is the last we have seen of this storyline and both men can move on.
Grade: C-
Notes and Highlights
- Even with a horrible gimmick, Gulak looks like he is having fun. This will help him continue to make the character more interesting.
- The crowd being so quiet makes a lot of 205 Live matches seem less exciting than they actually are.
- Aries and Gallagher had an encounter backstage. A-Double suggested they should work more like the heels who have been beating them recently. Gallagher was intrigued by the idea of an alliance, but he didn't like the idea of cheating.
Neville vs. Rich Swann
3 of 3Rich Swann and TJP had a backstage segment where the former champions seemed to put their differences aside and rekindle a possible friendship.
Tozawa was seated ringside for the main event to represent The Titus Brand, and Neville got right in his face to show he wasn't intimidated.
Swann and Neville have had several good matches in the past, so it came as no surprise when they stole the show again with this one.
They were given a lot more time than the first two matches, so they were able to pace themselves and tell a better story.
Neville secured the win after avoiding a Phoenix Splash and locking in the Rings of Saturn.
Grade: B+
Notes and Highlights
- How is 205 Live the least popular brand when it has one of the best champions in the entire company?
- Swann must love that tuxedo jacket he has been wearing since the Hall of Fame ceremony.
- The crowd finally woke up during this match.
