Kids Play Pickup Basketball Game in Parking Lot with Human Hoop

Andrew GouldJun 17, 2017

A group of kids wanted to play basketball, and it wasn't going to let a lack of court or hoop stop it.

SB Nation's Whitney Medworth shared her story of discovering children playing a pickup game outside a Holiday Inn Express hotel. At first perturbed by the nighttime noise, she was impressed to discover someone atop a storage container, extending his arms as a hoop.

When Medworth went down to witness their innovation, she found out they were members of a baseball team from Ontario, Canada, competing in an Ohio tournament this weekend. The Mississauga North Tigers named their pickup squads after boy bands from before their time: the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC.

Making the story even better, the guy who made the impromptu matchup possible was a stranger who offered a helping hoop. Medworth described Nick the Net's selfless sacrifice.

"They were originally just using a red mark on the storage container as the goal until Nick stepped in," Medworth wrote. "Nick and the Mississauga North Tigers don't know each other, but he offered to lay up there for two hours and get basketballs pelted off his face. Literally, I watched him get smashed about 18 times in five minutes, and he never once flinched or complained."

Per Medworth, the game ended because of the hotel's 11 p.m. noise ordinance. But not before the kids proved anything is possible with a little teamwork and ingenuity.
