Tennis Player Costs Himself Match by Yelling 'Stupid Person' and Losing Point
Some athletes are hard on themselves after a loss.
In this case, Australian tennis player Brydan Klein lost because he was too hard on himself.
During his ATP Nottingham Challenger match Thursday, Klein was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for yelling "stupid, stupid person…idiot!" after he knocked a ball into the net against Sam Groth. That penalty resulted in his losing the set and match.
While Klein appeared to be heckling himself, the judge's ruling was understandable, according to Deadspin's Laura Wagner.
The 27-year-old had already been given a penalty for insulting a line judge earlier in the match. Per Wagner:
"'I would like to help you, but it's too tough to call from here. I have to trust [the lineswoman],' [umpire Mo] Lahyani said. Klein said, 'She's a 60-year-old lady wearing like a...' and then Lahyani cut him off and assessed the first code violation. It's hard to make out the entire exchange, but it begins in this video around the 1:07:20 mark."
In any case, it was a peculiar way to lose.
