Ex-UFC Fighter Matt Hughes Airlifted to Hospital After Accident Involving Train

Former UFC fighter Matt Hughes was airlifted to the hospital Friday after a truck he was in collided with a moving train.

According to ESPN.com's Brett Okamoto, UFC president Dana White provided the details and said the following regarding Hughes' status: "Apparently he has head trauma. His family is traveling to him now."

A law enforcement official said Hughes' accident was near Hillsboro, Illinois, and he has been hospitalized in Springfield, Illinois, per Okamoto.

HSHS St. John's Hospital said, per Okamoto, that Hughes is stable and being helped in his recovery.

UFC tweeted well wishes toward Hughes and his family after news of the accident broke:

Per Okamoto, White didn't know where the crash occurred but said Hughes was helping his friend at the time. 

The 43-year-old Hughes is a former two-time UFC Welterweight champion who posted a career MMA record of 45-9.

Hughes last fought at UFC 135 in September 2011, losing to Josh Koscheck by knockout.
