Jimmie Johnson, Hendrick Motorsports Agree to 3-Year Contract Extension

Alec NathanJun 16, 2017

Seven-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson and Hendrick Motorsports agreed to a three-year contract extension that will ensure the 41-year-old is on the track through 2020, NASCAR announced on Friday.

Lowe's has also agreed to extend its primary sponsorship of Johnson's No. 48 car through the end of the 2018 NASCAR season.

"My relationship with Lowe's, Hendrick Motorsports and all of my teammates means so much to me," Johnson said in a statement on Friday. "I remember hoping to just win one race. Winning seven championships and 83 races was inconceivable, and now we have the opportunity to do even more together."

NASCAR's reigning champion, Johnson has been on a tear to start the 2017 season.

After opening his campaign with a disappointing 34th-place finish at the Daytona 500, Johnson has rattled off six top-10 finishes, including three wins.

Those triumphs came at Texas, Bristol and, most recently, Dover.

Entering Sunday's race at Michigan International Speedway, Johnson ranks seventh in the Monster Energy Cup standings—163 points behind leader Martin Truex Jr.
