Claude Puel's Contract Terminated by Southampton

Southampton confirmed on Wednesday they have parted company with manager Claude Puel.

Saints announced the decision via a statement on the club's official website:

"Southampton Football Club can today confirm that it has terminated the contract of Claude Puel with immediate effect.

"Everyone at Southampton would like to express our thanks to Claude for his hard work and commitment this year. The highlight of the season was a memorable day at Wembley in the EFL Cup Final, a day our fans will always treasure.

"We wish Claude well for the future.

"The search for a new management team is underway. We are confident that we will find the right fit in line with the long term vision of the club."

The experienced Frenchman took over from Ronald Koeman after the manager departed for Everton last summer, and he led the south-coast club to eighth in the Premier League last term.

However, the performance appears to have not been good enough for the board, despite the team's journey to Wembley Stadium in the EFL Cup final in February.

The 55-year-old remained with AS Monaco throughout his playing career in France and also went on to manage Les Monegasques.

He also had successful spells as a coach at Lille OSC, Lyon and OGC Nice before moving to England.
