Santa Clara Audit Says 49ers Owe More Than $2 Million for Levi's Stadium

Rob GoldbergJun 12, 2017

The San Francisco 49ers reportedly owe the city of Santa Clara more than $2 million for operational costs of Levi's Stadium.

Per Phil Matier and Andy Ross of the San Francisco Chronicle, the city issued an audit to discover the outstanding money owed, although the team "sharply disputes" the findings.

The biggest chunk of money, $894,000, comes from public safety cost left over from stadium construction. Other costs are for reimbursement for parking as well as fire safety and police. Still, the 49ers maintain they are up to date with their finances.

"We have paid every single bill we have received from the city of Santa Clara," spokesman Bob Lange said.

The team is only three years into a 40-year lease with the city, but the relationship has turned sour.

In January, the 49ers filed a lawsuit against Santa Clara for falsely accusing the team of violating its contract. Earlier this month, the city's mayor had harsh words for the NFL squad's leadership.

"We learned we cannot trust the 49ers," Lisa Gillmor said, per John Diaz of the San Francisco Chronicle. "They are our partners, but they have exploited what we've tried to do in the city."

With the latest accusations, it doesn't appear the partnership has improved.
