Rafael Nadal vs. Stan Wawrinka: Top Highlights, Comments from 2017 Men's Final

Christopher SimpsonJun 12, 2017

Rafael Nadal swept aside Stan Wawrinka to win his 10th French Open title on Sunday, taking little over two hours to ease to a 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 victory.

Like all those who came before him at Roland Garros this year—and virtually every year since 2005—Wawrinka was no match for the King of Clay on his favoured surface.

Nadal made history by becoming the first player in the Open era to win 10 titles at one Grand Slam, and he won La Decima in some style.

The Spaniard dropped just 35 games over the whole tournament, his best-ever return at Roland Garros, per FiveThirtyEight's Carl Bialik:

He was suitably dominant in Sunday's final.

After both players took time in the first set to settle into the contest, Nadal nullified Wawrinka's biggest weapon—his tremendous firepower on both sides of the court, which helped him beat world No. 1 Andy Murray in the semi-final—with relentless energy and pressure on every point.

Indeed, in the first set, Wawrinka hit just four winners compared with 17 unforced errors, per the French Open's official website, and the break point he earned—and failed to take—early on would be his only opportunity in the entire match.

Wawrinka vented his frustrations on his racket as the second set slipped quickly from his grasp:

As is to be expected, the highlights paint a picture of a largely one-sided affair, with Wawrinka only able to show the briefest flashes of his quality, per Roland Garros:

Per BBC Sport's Piers Newbery, Nadal was delighted with his incredible achievement: "In 2005, I thought in 2017, I'd be fishing on my boat in Mallorca. I didn't really think I'd have such a long career and win so many tournaments."

He added:

"This tournament has been very special to me, and it's true that it is unprecedented.

"Trust me, I'm very happy that I'm the one who did it. If I can do it, someone else can do it, but you need the right circumstances, the right ingredients to win 10 French Open titles.

"I don't know if I will ever get to meet the player who will do better than I did."

The fourth seed was evidently emotional as he collected his title:

Per Newbery, Wawrinka could only praise his opponent and express just how difficult it is to play against him in this form: "For sure he's playing the best he's ever played, but not only here. I think since the beginning of the year, you can see he's playing more aggressive, staying more close from the line. That's clearly the best he ever played. That's why he's winning so much again."

He added: "If you play Rafa, if you're not completely free with what you think and what you're going to do, and not completely relaxed the way you're going to play, you have no chance."

While the Spaniard may not be quite as dominant on grass, his imperious form is an ominous sign ahead of Wimbledon.

Nadal hasn't come close to winning in SW19 since reaching the final in 2011, but he has tasted victory there twice in the past.

After a difficult couple of years struggling with illness and injury, Nadal is finally back to his considerable best, and he'll be a firm contender in London next month.
