Canadian F1 Grand Prix 2017 Results: Lewis Hamilton Dominates from Pole Position

Rory MarsdenJun 11, 2017

Lewis Hamilton converted pole position into a comfortable race win as he dominated from the front to triumph at the 2017 Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday, cutting Sebastian Vettel's championship lead to 12 points.

The Mercedes driver was barely troubled and eased to victory for the sixth win of his career in Montreal, with his teammate Valtteri Bottas finishing second and Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo completing the podium.

Vettel, meanwhile, had trouble at the start from second on the grid and had to pit very early. The four-time world champion recovered well, though, and managed to finish an impressive fourth to limit the damage.

Here's a look at Sunday's results, via the F1 official Twitter account:

Early on, Red Bull's Max Verstappen pulled off an audacious move up from fifth to second as Vettel was also overtaken by Bottas to drop back to fourth.

A collision further back in the field between Carlos Sainz and Felipe Massa resulted in both crashing out of the race.

When racing continued after the safety car left the track, Vettel lost half his front wing having been clipped by Verstappen at the start, and the German was forced to take a pit stop, dropping well back in the field.

Hamilton gradually began to draw away at the front, but the 19-year-old Verstappen looked in inspired form.

However, the Dutchman then drew to a halt and was forced to retire on the 11th lap, to his huge frustration, per Sky Sports F1:

While Ferrari and Red Bull were enduring mixed fortunes, the two Mercedes cars of Hamilton and Bottas looked in full control placed first and second, respectively.

Esteban Ocon, impressive in the Force India, briefly split the pair following Bottas' pit stop, but Mercedes' monopoly of the front of the race was re-established by the midway point.

The race for the final podium spot was intense, though, with Ricciardo, Ocon, Sergio Perez and Vettel all tightly bunched with 20 laps of 70 remaining.

Vettel then pitted again from sixth, with his team convinced the fresh tyres would pay dividends, per DW Sports:

Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen was the first man in Vettel's sights, and the Finn gifted him his place with a mistake nine laps from the finish.

Vettel then rejoined the race for third, with Ricciardo having held off the two battling Force India cars, and he passed Ocon with four laps to go with a bold move.

He then passed Perez with another stunning move to get into fourth, and although he had no time left to catch Ricciardo and make the podium, it was a brilliant race from Vettel given the circumstances.

Hamilton, meanwhile, eased to victory as others battled behind him, cutting the gap to the championship leader ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix later in June.
