French Open 2017 Men's Final: Rafael Nadal vs. Stan Wawrinka Predictions

Rafael Nadal will enter the 2017 French Open final as the favourite to add a 10th title to his remarkable resume, as the Spaniard cruised to yet another win on Friday to set up a showdown with Stan Wawrinka.

While Wawrinka needed five sets to get past Andy Murray, Nadal lost just seven games on his way past Dominic Thiem.

Of the two, Nadal wasted the least energy in the semi-finals. After Thiem―who defeated the 31-year-old in Rome earlier this season―put on a solid effort in the first two sets, the Spaniard shifted gears and made the Austrian look like an amateur in the third.

It was the type of dominant performance fans have gotten used to from Nadal in Paris, and it stood in stark contrast to what Wawrinka showed at times against Murray.

The Swiss star dominated the Olympic champion for the bulk of the match, but he also made plenty of mistakes.

Those 77 errors were punished in the first and third set, and Murray seemed to have momentum on his side before his legs appeared to give out. After losing the tiebreak in the fourth, he lacked the energy to prolong the rallies in the decider, winning just a single game.

That likely won't happen to Nadal, who has barely wasted any energy so far. The Spaniard also likely won't get in a funk the way Murray did―he lost six games in a row and found himself in a hole in the third, yet somehow he came back to reclaim the lead.

Wawrinka can beat Nadal, but he'll need to overcome his biggest weakness: his lack of consistency. Nadal has been almost mistake-free during this year's French Open, combining superb defence with excellent work from the baseline―Wawrinka will have to match those efforts.

If he can't do that, another lopsided win for Nadal seems likely.
