Patrick Kluivert Steps Down as PSG Director of Football

Paris Saint-Germain confirmed on Friday that Patrick Kluivert has left his position as the club’s director of football.

In a statement on their official website, the Ligue 1 giants said the two parties came to the decision by "mutual agreement" and the move is part of "the restructuring of the club's sporting sector."

Kluivert was appointed to the role in July 2016.  

Although PSG won the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue in 2016-17, the club are set for a significant revamp this summer after losing the Ligue 1 title to Monaco. The capital club were also eliminated from the UEFA Champions League in embarrassing fashion, surrendering a four-goal first-leg lead against Barcelona.

As noted by FourFourTwo, while manager Unai Emery is set to retain his position, club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is set to make changes elsewhere. Sporting director Olivier Letang has been replaced by Antero Henrique.

Kluivert has followed Letang out at the Parc des Princes, and as noted by Tom Coast of Sport Witness, it was an appointment that never really made total sense:

The 40-year-old is a legendary figure in Dutch football, turning out for the national team on 79 occasions and netting 40 goals.

Kluivert is also remembered for his time with Ajax, where he helped the team win the 1994-95 UEFA Champions League, and Barcelona, where he won the 1998-99 La Liga title.
