Adam WellsJun 8, 2017

San Antonio Spurs vice president of basketball operations Monty Williams will be honored during the first-ever NBA Awards show on June 26 as the recipient of the Sager Strong Award.

Per an official release from NBA.com, the award is named after longtime TNT sideline reporter Craig Sager and "will be presented annually to an individual who has been a trailblazer while exemplifying courage."

The release included a statement from Williams about receiving the honor:

"Craig Sager's amazing attitude was truly inspirational. He was a champion during his battle, fighting every day with grace and humor.  I have great respect for Craig, Stacy and the Sager family so it's humbling to be the first recipient of the Sager Strong Award. In our case, my children and I couldn't have made it through the tough times without the grace of God and the wonderful support we received from family and friends. For all of those who prayed for us, everyone who provided us with hope, love and support, it's impossible to thank each of you enough. We are forever grateful."

In February 2016, Williams' wife Ingrid Williams died due to injuries sustained in a car accident when her vehicle was hit head-on by another vehicle that lost control while changing lanes.

Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich spoke about Sager's legacy and Williams being given this honor: "Craig Sager remains an iconic and courageous figure for all of us. I know Monty feels honored to be associated with this award and is certainly deserving of this recognition."

Williams spent five seasons as head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans from 2010-15 and led the franchise to two playoff appearances. He was hired by the Spurs as their vice president of basketball operations in September 2016.
