French Open 2017 Women's Final: TV Schedule, Start Time and Live-Stream Info

Tom SunderlandJun 8, 2017

Simona Halep and Jelena Ostapenko will contest the final of the 2017 French Open after respective semi-final wins over Karolina Pliskova and Timea Bacsinszky saw the pair qualify for Saturday's decider.

Halep rejected a mid-match comeback attempt from Pliskova to emerge the 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victor, a feat replicated by Ostapenko as she ousted Bacsinszky with a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-3 scoreline.

David will stand opposite Goliath in Saturday's finale, when youth will meet experience in what promises to be either a one-sided showcase or a blockbuster for the ages.

Ostapenko has already taken three seeded opponents out of the tournament, but No. 11 seed Caroline Wozniacki may be the toughest challenge she's faced thus far, a far cry from Halep, arguably female tennis' strongest force at present.

One might have guessed Halep knew she had an unseeded opponent awaiting her in the French Open final if she managed to eliminate Pliskova, such was the vigour with which she thundered at the home favourite on Thursday.

And like Ostapenko's earlier semi-final, it was a decisive third set that sealed Pliskova's fate after her standards slipped just that bit too far to give Halep her chance at clinching Romanian history, per ESPN Stats and Info:

That being said, Halep will want to clean up her performance after netting only 14 winners against Pliskova, per the IBM Slamtracker, leaning somewhat on her opponent's 55 unforced errors to advance.

But Pliskova appeared to be under no illusions as to who deserved their place in the French Open showdown on Saturday and gave Halep a resounding vote of confidence, per Ben Rothenberg of the New York Times:

Many will call Saturday's final against a 20-year-old foe easier pickings, but the burden of a Grand Slam final can be profound, and there's no telling how Ostapenko will rise to the occasion free of any pressures.

Ostapenko became the first unseeded player to make the French Open final in 24 years on Thursday, beating 30th seed Bacsinszky in three sets to stage yet another upset and keep her campaign going at Roland Garros.

It just so happened to be Ostapenko's birthday on Thursday, too, and Christopher Clarey of the New York Times was on hand to provide an almost fateful piece of trivia related to the Latvian:

While the youngster's rampage through Paris has been a sight to behold, she faces inarguably the most difficult test of her journey thus far in the form of Halep, who will be the firm favourite for Saturday's meeting.

Not only will Ostapenko be attempting to topple the odds when she faces her Romanian foe, but she'll do so seeking an audacious first in professional tennis, per tennis writer David Law:

Halep's semi-final defeat of Pliskova was but the latest display of the potential she brings to the table in her current form, having proved her credentials by taking out another heavyweight of the sport in her penultimate test.

In comparison, Saturday's duel promises to pit the would-be world No. 1 against a foe of much smaller stature, a new test for the veteran seeking her maiden major victory in France.
