It’s never easy to go on the road in college basketball. This is a top 25 breakdown of some of the toughest and most intimidating venues in college basketball.

Venue: Carrier Dome

School Name: Syracuse

Location: Syracuse, New York

Capacity: 33,633

How many college basketball players can say that they have played in front of over 30,000 people on a given night? How many teams can say their venue is home to their football team as well as their basketball team?

Syracuse University provides an atmosphere that fits both these questions.

It has seen everything from a National Championship to NBA players to one of the winningest coaches of all time. It serves a member of the Big East Conference, and its capacity of over 33,000 fans for basketball is why the Carrier Dome is one of the toughest places to play in the country.

The Carrier Dome is the largest on-campus basketball arena in the country, and with a venue that has exceeded capacity numerous times in the past, that says more than enough about the passion in its fans.

You can build the biggest arena in the country, but if you can’t put fans in the seats, then you have a problem. Syracuse has the largest arena in the country, and they put more than enough fans in the seats. Therefore, it is of no surprise that Syracuse ranks near the top in single-season and per-game attendance in the country each year.

Syracuse hopped back into the NCAA Tournament last year after being squarely on the bubble but not qualifying in 2007 and 2008. Yes, the Orange lost a lot in this past offseason, but anchored by one of the most physical frontcourts in the country, Syracuse might find themselves right back in the NCAA Tournament this season.

With capacity crowds covered in orange and one of the best coaches in the nation in Jim Boeheim, you can never really count Syracuse out no matter who they’ve lost. With big wins at home coming each year for the Orange and their fans, more are sure to come.

There will be plenty of tough teams coming to the Carrier Dome this season, as there are each and every year. The likes of Big East powers Georgetown, Connecticut, Louisville, and Villanova all pay a visit to the Carrier Dome, as well as non-conference matchups against potential Ivy League favorite Cornell and an early January game with the Memphis Tigers.

Syracuse is very proud of having such a large venue and having the ability to fill it up continuously for their home team. On the flip side, being able to scream alongside that many people and getting to root for the Orange speaks volumes to why the Carrier Dome is one of the best atmospheres in college basketball today.
