Recap
Having been pegged back in his previous French Open outings against Martin Klizan and Juan Martin Del Potro, Murray was permitted an easier go of things against Khachanov on Monday, his second straight-sets win in as many matches.
After falling out in the fourth round of this year's Australian Open, Murray is now back on the trail for Grand Slam glory and notched an impressive career landmark along the way, per The Times' Stuart Fraser:
But Nishikori promises to offer the world No. 1 a major obstacle to overcome in the last eight, and the French Open's No. 8 seed was forced to fight through adversity on Monday in order to clinch his quarter-final spot.
Verdasco landed a heavy hit on Japan's biggest name after sealing a donut scoreline in the opening set, but Portuguese tennis journalist Jose Morgado lavished praise upon Nishikori for his comeback:
Wawrinka was also put to the sword in his fourth-round clash against France's last remaining survivor, Monfils, but battled through two tetchy sets and a routine third to triumph 7-5, 7-6(7), 6-2 in the end.
The Swiss made sure to seal his victory with a classy finish, too, pinning his opponent to the baseline with a backhand return Monfils found just too hot to handle, via Eurosport UK:
While that clash was edgy for the most part, Halep's 6-1 6-1 mauling of Spanish hopeful Suarez Navarro fell on the other end of the spectrum.
Halep thrived under pressure and won six of the seven break points she faced, per the IBM Slamtracker, compared to Suarez Navarro's success rate of just one in six. The match was over in swift fashion, and tennis reporter Rene Denfeld lauded the Romanian's prowess:
Her quarter-final opponent, Svitolina, took a slightly more uneasy route into the last eight and lost serve twice in the opening set of her meeting against Croat Martic before finding her groove to progress 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
What's more, Svitolina showed some deficiencies throughout the clash and was far from perfect, suffering five breaks of serve in total, but Ben Rothenberg of the New York Times was overawed by her five-game streak and comeback at the climax:
Later in the day, Paris witnessed a battle between native talents as Garcia, 23, and Cornet, 27, warred over a place in the quarters, but it was the former who proved experience isn't a prerequisite to winning.
No. 28 seed Garcia ultimately emerged with what proved to be a routine 6-2, 6-4 victory, but Cornet didn't shy away from the occasion and contributed her own highlight-reel moments to the occasion:
Pliskova may be the second seed in this competition, but even she came close to breaking point on Monday after she was forced to play three sets against unseeded Cepede before sealing a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win.
The Czech contender will go up against Garcia on Wednesday as the highest-seeded player remaining in the women's bracket takes on its second-lowest.
