Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal Speak on Safety at Wimbledon After London Attack

Rob GoldbergJun 4, 2017

The recent terror attacks in England raised safety concerns about Wimbledon, but the top players aren't going to back out of the event.

Novak Djokovic said he won't withdraw from the Grand Slam event, which is set to begin on July 3, because an attack "can really happen anywhere."

"I mean, if we live in fear, you know, that's not life," the three-time Wimbledon winner said Sunday, per the Associated Press (via ESPN). "... If it's a destiny for you to be somewhere in some place in a wrong time, I mean, it can happen to all of us, God forbid."

Just two weeks after a bomb attack in Manchester, seven people were killed Saturday night in Central London, per CNN.

"[It's] very bad news, and with these kind of things, you cannot feel 100 percent safe," Rafael Nadal added. "That's very bad news for everybody."

Despite the concerns, Nadal gave no indication he will avoid the third major championship of the year.

The top players in the world are currently competing at the French Open at Roland Garros in Paris, another city that has been targeted by terrorists. The only players who skipped the event did so for other reasons, such as injuries or for preparation for future events.

With security already a top priority at the All-England Club this summer, per Leo Spall of ESPN.com, players should feel safe about competing in the biggest event on the tennis calendar.
