Casey Dellacqua Responds to Margaret Court's Anti-Gay Comments
Tennis player Casey Dellacqua took a strong stance against Margaret Court's previous anti-gay comments.
"I'm very conscious of the fact that everyone is allowed their opinion, but when you start singling out my family especially, that's when it's not OK," Dellacqua said Wednesday after her doubles match at the French Open, per Bonnie D. Ford of ESPN.com.
"And my family do not deserve to be subject to that. She can have her opinion, but my family does not deserve that and did not deserve that. That's when I thought, 'You know what, it's my time to speak up.'"
Ford noted Dellacqua has two children with partner Amanda Judd.
Court, who is the women's Grand Slam title record-holder, wrote a letter in 2013 after the birth of Judd and Dellacqua's son saying, “this child has been deprived of his father. ... I simply want to champion the rights of the family over the rights of the individual to engineer social norms and produce children into their relationships," via Ford.
This isn't the first time Dellacqua commented on Court's bigoted stance. She also took to Twitter to say "Enough is enough:"
According to Ford, Dellacqua initially didn't respond to Court's comments because she was focusing on new motherhood, but the Grand Slam record holder has continued to make anti-gay comments during interviews.
On the court, Dellacqua and doubles partner Ashleigh Barty won their first-round match at the French Open with relative ease, 6-0, 6-2. They are set to play 18th-seeded Miyu Kato and Eri Hozumi in the second round.
