French Open 2017: Novak Djokovic's Straight Sets Win Tops Wednesday's Action
Novak Djokovic cruised to a straight sets victory over Joao Sousa at the 2017 French Open on Wednesday, beating the Portuguese 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 at Roland Garros.
Rafael Nadal progressed to the third round of the tournament in similar comfort as he dispatched Robin Haase by an identical scoreline.
Defending women's champion Garbine Muguruza had to come from behind to beat Anett Kontaveit 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2, while Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Kiki Bertens and Petra Kvitova all suffered upsets at the hands of Renzo Olivo, Catherine Bellis and Bethanie Mattek-Sands, respectively.
The full scores can be found at the tournament's official website.
Wednesday Recap
Djokovic won in three sets once again on Wednesday, but on this occasion, he was far more convincing than in the opening round, in which he was broken four times.
The Serb took the first set inside half an hour and quickly went a break up in the second, outclassing Sousa despite the 28-year-old playing better than the scoreline suggested.
Sousa was able to pull a break back, but Djokovic responded immediately and went ahead once more.
Some frustration crept into the world No. 2's game in the third set, per Eurosport UK:
Nevertheless, Djokovic was able to save three break points on his way to seeing out the match.
Nadal also won 6-1, 6-4, 6-3, but he perhaps looked even more imperious as he got past Haase without dropping a single service game, and the Dutchman never even had the opportunity to break him.
Per the tournament's official website, Nadal hit 33 winners—his forehand in particular looked ominously good.
A Haase double-fault—one of four he produced during the contest—sealed the Spaniard's win.
Carried on from Tuesday, Tsonga resumed his match against Olivo, with the Frenchman serving to stay in the contest at 5-7, 4-6, 7-6 (6), 4-5.
The local favourite would not even manage to do that, and Olivo sealed the match in style at the fourth time of asking:
Emotions were running high on Court 6 when Steve Johnson took on Borna Coric, with the American coming out on top 6-2, 7-6 (10), 3-6, 7-6 (8) in almost four hours.
Johnson, whose father died earlier in May, broke down in tears after the match, while Coric vented his frustration at the defeat, per Roland Garros' official Twitter feed:
In the women's draw, Kontaveit gave Muguruza a real scare as she won the first set in their match.
The Spaniard fought back from a break down to force a tiebreaker, but the Estonian held firm to draw first blood. Muguruza has now lost seven of 10 tiebreaks she has played in this year.
Kontaveit consolidated the first set with a break to open the second, but Muguruza eventually replied with some powerful and aggressive shot-making and took the second set:
The battle continued into the third, but the reigning champion would ultimately prove too strong for her opponent as she closed out the match.
There was little to separate Mattek-Sands or Kvitova in either of their sets as they went to a tiebreaker on each occasion, but the American showed impressive resilience to edge out her opponent 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5).
Bellis also had success with a tiebreak. After the 18-year-old eased past last year's semi-finalist Bertens in the first set, the pair broke each other three times apiece in a thrilling second, but it was the youngster who held her nerve to win 6-3, 7-6 (5).
