Iowa Hawkeyes Land Pair of Defensive Linemen Along with Michigan Win

Sayre BedingerOct 12, 2009

It was a big weekend for the Iowa Hawkeyes football team, not only holding on for a huge 30-28 victory over Big Ten rival Michigan, but also in the business of recruiting.

The Hawkeyes added some depth to their defensive front when they received verbal commitments from Martin High School (Arlington, TX) defensive end Donavan Johnson and Adlai Stevenson High School (Sterling Heights, MI) defensive tackle Carl Davis.

Johnson is listed on Rivals.com as a defensive end prospect, but ESPN.com lists him as an offensive lineman, most likely a guard.  Scout.com thinks he is a defensive tackle, so he is apparently a very versatile player, seeing as he currently plays offensive tackle in high school.

The signing of Johnson is big for the Hawkeyes, who will lose both Adrian Clayborn and Christian Ballard following the 2011 season.

Due to his size (6'2" 245) and athleticism, Johnson appears to be a defensive end prospect, or possibly a defensive tackle prospect if he gains weight in the next couple years, which Iowa players certainly have done.

Carl Davis appears to be the next big defensive lineman prospect for the Hawkeyes.  He is listed at 6'5" 300 pounds, and has the frame to grow.  He could turn into an elite player in this defensive scheme.

Davis, a Michigan native, was considering signing with Michigan State or Wisconsin, but the victory over the Wolverines sold him on the Hawkeyes.

Davis and Johnson join a group of defensive linemen who have already committed to the Hawkeyes in three star prospects Anthony Ferguson (6'2" 280), Matt Hoch (6'5" 230), Mike Hardy (6'5" 260) and Louis Trinca-Pasat (6'3" 235).

The Hawkeyes have an underrated recruiting class which could really grow with their recent emergence.  They have played so well that four-star TE prospect C.J. Fiedorowicz is considering rescinding his commitment to Illinois to join the Hawkeyes.
