The 49ers tabbed Thomas as a future cornerstone along their defensive line with the third pick in this year's draft, marking the third time in as many years the team selected a defensive lineman with a first-round pick following the additions of Arik Armstead in 2015 and DeForest Buckner in 2016.

The question moving forward, then, revolves around where Thomas will line up when the 2017 season opens since the 6'3", 273-pound force is capable of playing defensive end or defensive tackle in the 49ers' 4-3 scheme.

For now, though, it looks like Thomas will move around quite a bit based on whether the 49ers are in their base defense or a sub-package.

According to ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner, defensive line coach Jeff Zgonina "told Thomas at the combine he would envision him working at left defensive end in coordinator Robert Saleh's 4-3 defensive scheme, with the versatility to move inside to defensive tackle in passing situations."

Whether he's operating as a disruptive force off the edge or knifing through interior offensive linemen to blow up running plays for losses, Thomas should start to wreak havoc in no time.
