Alabama Softball Player Misses Home Plate After Hitting Home Run, Is Tagged Out

Alabama's Bailey Hemphill appeared to scorch a game-tying home run against SEC rival Mississippi on Monday night. The blast instead ended with one long, confusing out.

With her teammates circled around home plate, Hemphill attempted an emphatic jump on the base. Although it's difficult to tell with the players blocking the view, she apparently leaped over her intended target.

The umpire, staring right at the plate, handed the ball to Rebels catcher Courtney Syrett, who appeared to point to home. 

As she headed back to the dugout, someone off screen twice yelled “Touch the plate!” Hemphill attempted to do so, but Syrett was waiting to tag her.

The lost run proved costly for Alabama, which fell short in a 5-4 loss.
