Cooper Kupp Drafted by LA Rams; Father and Grandfather Played in NFL

Rob GoldbergApr 28, 2017

The Los Angeles Rams are hoping they found a sleeper with the 69th overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft, selecting receiver Cooper Kupp out of Eastern Washington.

While he was far from a household name during his college football career, Kupp is one of the most productive players in FCS history.

He ended his career as the all-time FCS leader in catches (428), receiving yards (6,464) and receiving touchdowns (73). He averaged 8.2 receptions for 124.3 yards per game over the course of his four years with the Eagles.

The team also used him on special teams when it was needed, and he came through with three punt return touchdowns in just 23 attempts over his final three seasons.

Although fans and plenty of general managers are likely to overlook this production due to a lack of elite competition, the numbers are impressive regardless of who he faced. Brad Evans of Yahoo Sports compares him to former New Orleans Saints star Marques Colston:

Kupp has solid size for the position at 6'2", 204 pounds with excellent hands that make him an ideal outside receiver. Even without elite speed, he can win battles with the ball in the air and give his quarterback a wide margin for error.

He also isn't going to settle now that he has reached the NFL.

"No part of my game is ever gonna be good enough for me," Kupp said on Sirius XM NFL Radio earlier this month. "Always going to be part of my game under construction."

He should be able to make an early impact for a Rams team that lost its best receiver to free agency in Kenny Britt. Jared Goff will clearly need weapons to help his development in his second year.

Even with the step up in competition being significant, Los Angeles will likely need him to come through early next season.

The Rams took tight end Gerald Everett from South Alabama with their first pick in the draft. Kupp gives the team the outside weapon it needs to help turn Goff into a franchise quarterback one year after he was drafted first overall.
