WWE NXT Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from April 19

Erik BeastonApr 19, 2017

The intense rivalry between Sanity's Eric Young and "The Perfect 10" Tye Dillinger came to a head Wednesday night on the WWE Network as the Superstars headlined this week's episode of NXT.

After months of falling victim to the numbers game, Dillinger had the opportunity to square off with Young inside the confines of a steel cage. Pent-up frustration fueled the fan favorite, who saved the biggest win of his NXT career for last.

The war of attrition was not the only significant occurrence on the April 19 episode.

One week after being humiliated by Liv Morgan and Aliyah, The Iconic Duo of Peyton Royce and Billie Kay sought revenge against the young, energetic babyfaces. They would have their opportunity to attain just that as the four women met in a huge tag team bout.

Andrade Almas was in action, and NXT champion Bobby Roode graced fans with his presence to round out the card. Which star would step up to challenge Roode, leaving the titleholder lying in a heap?

Find out now with this recap of Wednesday's broadcast.

Bobby Roode Promo

1 of 4

The NXT champion kicked off this week's show with an in-ring promo, addressing the fans inside Full Sail University.

He stated that neither the fans nor anyone in the NXT locker room deserved to be the champion, then not-so-subtly suggested everyone get onboard with him as the top dog or suffer a fate similar to that of Shinsuke Nakamura.

Hideo Itami interrupted. He came face-to-face with the arrogant champion and slapped him, drawing "oohs" and "ahhs" from the NXT faithful.

Roode charged into Itami and ate a GTS for his trouble as the Japanese star established himself the top challenger to The Glorious One's title.

Analysis

Roode talks a big game, Itami shows up to call his bluff and the heel gets put down in dramatic fashion.

This was a fantastic way to kick off their feud and set up the Japanese as the next No. 1 contender.

Best of all, fans still respond favorably to Itami despite his history of injuries. That could all change if he fails to seize this opportunity and prove to the world what the big deal was when he signed in the first place.

Danny Burch vs. Andrade Almas

2 of 4

Veteran Englishman Danny Burch returned to the NXT Arena Wednesday night, squaring off with the underrated Andrade "Cien" Almas.

Burch proved double tough, cutting Almas' offense off on several occasions. Despite being in the best shape of his career, he was unable to seize control and put the Mexican competitor away.

Almas exploded into Burch with his running double knees, then finished him off with his trademark hammerlock DDT for the pinfall victory.

Analysis

It's nice to see Almas score a strong victory in NXT. Often the punching bag for any new face Triple H's baby wants to promote prominently, the Mexican is an underrated performer who appears to have found his niche as a cocky, pretty boy bad guy.

All he needs is a bit of momentum, something he can gather for himself with quality wins over respected stars.

Aliyah and Liv Morgan vs. Peyton Royce and Billie Kay

3 of 4

The Iconic Duo sought vengeance following their humiliation at the hands of Liv Morgan and Aliyah on last week's show.

The Aussies used their size and strength advantages to wear down the opposition. First, they isolated Morgan. When the New Jerseyan was able to make the hot tag to Aliyah, they weathered the storm and grounded the Toronto native.

Late in the match, Morgan made the save for her partner, dropkicking Kay. It provided a distraction that allowed Aliyah to score the upset pinfall victory, much to the dismay of the spoiled brat heels.

Liv Morgan and Aliyah defeated Peyton Royce and Billie Kay

Analysis

This was a match that showcased the limitations of all four performers, but at the same time, it served as proof of their development. A match between these two teams as early as three months ago would have been an ugly watch.

While this was hardly a classic battle between two extraordinary tandems, it was a fun sprint that told a story and advanced the budding rivalry between the teams.

Lack of experience on the part of the babyfaces taken into consideration, this was surprisingly effective.

Steel Cage Match: Tye Dillinger vs. Eric Young

4 of 4

Tye Dillinger was all too eager to lock the steel cage door, trapping Eric Young in the squared circle without the assistance of his deranged followers in Sanity. An eye gouge halted The Perfect 10's early flurry, though, and allowed the former TNA world champion to seize control of the bout.

Young used the cage to his advantage, bashing Dillinger into and off the unforgiving steel.

After cutting off several escape attempts by Young, The Perfect 10 unloaded months of frustration, sending him into the steel repeatedly. Young was bloodied, and the official attempted to clean him up when Sanity hit the ring.

Kassius Ohno and Roderick Strong made the save for the babyface. Moments later, though, Killian Dain entered the ring, only to join Young in enduring a high cross body block from Dillinger off the top of the cage.

Despite a last-minute attempt by Alexander Wolfe to get into the structure, Dillinger escaped and scored the victory.

Analysis

This was a fun, chaotic, intense, wild and passionate wrestling match that served as the perfect sendoff for Dillinger. The Perfect 10, long the heart of soul of NXT even when he was stuck jobbing to less-talented stars, went out on a winning note as he settled his long-standing issues with Sanity once and for all.

The action and late-match run-ins helped add a sense of urgency and importance to the bout, separating it from recent television main events. A quality that earns its place in the annals of NXT.

Look for Strong and Ohno to find themselves in the crosshairs of Sanity now that Dillinger is gone.
