Recap
Conserving energy in the earlier stages of competitions such as these can often be key to a player's chances of victory, and "Sascha" Zverev ensured he did just that with an efficient straight-sets win over Seppi.
The German went about his work in a clinical manner and broke serve a total of five times without ever conceding his own. Boris Becker even took to social media to tweet his applause for the 19-year-old:
Zverev turns 20 this Thursday and will face either Feliciano Lopez or Daniil Medvedev in the second round, while hoping some birthday fortune might be the edge he needs to continue his run on the French Riviera.
Berdych was made to work much harder for his victory against Kuznetsov after he dropped the first set in Monte Carlo and proceeded to engage in a battle that took more than two hours to decide.
It was hardly the routine win the Czech desired in his tournament opener, but Berdych progressed and will face either Benoit Paire or Tommy Haas in the second phase of the competition.
Elsewhere, there was drama as two of Britain's top tournament hopes collided in the opening round, and Edmund capitalised in the rankings after downing Evans with a 7-5, 6-1 victory, per The Times' Stuart Fraser:
His prize will be a second-round outing against clay heavyweight Rafael Nadal, who happens to hold the record for the most wins at the Monte Carlo Masters (nine) and is the fourth seed to clinch a 10th title in 2017.
Carreno Busta was made to work a lot harder for his 7-6(0), 6-7(4), 6-3 triumph over Fognini. It was only in the last set that the Spaniard was able to open any daylight. Tennis TV posted footage of one of the match's decisive third-point sets, where it was Carreno Busta's stamina that pulled him through:
Countryman Bautista Agut was also forced to play three sets in a 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 comeback victory against Basilashvili, and the same could be said for Nicolas Almagro and Adrian Mannarino in their wins over Martin Klizan and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, respectively.
Bernard Tomic exited the tournament following a 6-1, 7-6(3) loss to Argentinian Diego Schwartzman, while 15th seed Albert Ramos Vinolas advanced after beating Renzo Olivo 6-2, 6-3.
